A Native Northern Californian with 49 years of hands on fly fishing for trout, Jon Baiocchi carries on the tradition of sharing the knowledge and the passion passed down from his father, a fly fishing hall of famer, and a legendary voice for saving California fisheries for over 40 years. Jon’s home is the rich flora and fauna of the foothills to the Northern Sierra. Fly fishing, guiding, public speaking, tying, writing, and teaching. The Baiocchi family legacy continues...

Lake Davis Fishing Report 9/23
The fall bite has begun at Lake Davis and every day will improve until the peak which should occur near the end of October. There has been many days of big wind so far in September like last Saturday with gusts to 35mph. Despite the conditions anglers are still doing well with many quality fish from 16-22", some with parasites, and many that are fat with beautiful olive backs. Water temps are running 57.2 - 65.6, and the level of the lake is at 70%. I've noticed that DWR is releasing more than usual water amounts in the last 2 weeks. Yesterday brought the first flock of Sand Hill cranes that are migrating from the Modoc Plateau to the Sacramento Valley - A welcomed sight!
On the menu for the trout, a very good Callibaetis hatch with rising fish on the bank to open water when the wind is down. The little chartreuse midge is out with a sparse amount of blood midges as well. All styles of fly fishing is producing: floating line and long leaders off the bank, covering water in a personal water craft with an intermediate line, and deep indicator presentations. Top flies include burnt orange wiggle tails, pheasant tail flashbacks, sheep creek specials, and olive buggers.
On a special note I'd like to thank our guests who participated in our Fall Still Water Outings and braved the winds and rain this past weekend, I think we were the only ones on the lake Saturday. It's awesome to see such dedication and passion in those types of conditions! You folks are SO hardy!
I'll be on the road for the next 2 months guiding and fishing Lake Davis and Eagle Lake. If you see me out there give me a shout, I'd love to talk trout with you!
